Draper James gal Abby Green, known on Instagram as @putonkindness, previously taught us the most important Southern etiquette rules as well as her tips on how to host a flawless Southern brunch.
This time, in honor of the season, Abby sat down to tell us the five key things every Southern Christmas party needs.
1. Décor, décor, décor
Decorate your home early so you can relax and enjoy the season. Your Christmas décor will set the tone for your party.
Live greenery, berries, pinecones and magnolia leaves make elegant Southern Christmas displays. You may be able to find some of this greenery in your own backyard, so you don’t have to break the bank. A simple wreath on your front door and a fresh arrangement on your mailbox create a welcoming atmosphere for your guests as they arrive to your home.
2. Is there anything more important than the food?
Plan your menu ahead of time and be sure to include decadent desserts. Coffee, Southern spiced tea, and hot chocolate all pair great with desserts, especially when it’s cold outside. Warm drinks have a way of making people feel cozy and full of Christmas cheer.
3. Have a little fun, y’all
A holiday-themed game or activity can add some fun to your party. One of my favorite ideas is having a photo booth with Christmas themed props for your guests. And what Southern gal doesn’t love to post her festive pictures on social media?
4. Holiday Tunes
There’s nothing like Christmas music to instantly spread Christmas cheer. Playing soft music in the background will allow your guests to relax and enjoy their evening. I like to have a good mix of traditional Christmas songs and upbeat contemporary ones. Playing a variety of each helps ensure you will include songs that everyone will enjoy.
5. Candles, candles, and more candles
You want your home to feel comfortable and have the smell of Christmas. The Draper James Holiday Spice Candle does just that. It is in a classic glass jar and it has the perfect blend of cinnamon and clove that is sure to fill your home with the Christmas spirit. There’s just something about the smell of Christmas that everyone loves. It truly is the most wonderful time of the year so why not enjoy and celebrate it?
