There are some things we’ll leave behind in 2017, and other things we’ll bring with us.
Two things we’d never not bring along with us? Our Winter Dots Cold Shoulder Top and Embellished Elizabeth Cape, styled here by Monica Lavin from Lavin Label.
Right before the holidays, the Georgia resident took the time to chat with us about these two styles, as well as the fashion rules she lives by and the one fashion faux pas she hopes won’t make it into the new year.
Tell us about how you chose to style this look.
I chose to highlight the wintry white print by pairing this open shoulder top with white dress pants. The ensemble makes it the perfect outfit to ring in the New Year! The cape, of course, is great for layering, especially since we have mild winters in Southern Georgia.
What style rules do you plan to live by in 2018?
I’m such a traditionalist at heart so I tend to stay away from extreme trends. Since I’m in my early 30s, I’ll continue to invest in classic pieces that I’ll have for years (which is why I love Draper James!) Maybe it will be the year to splurge in a classic pair of leather pants.
What drew you to each of these pieces?
I’m usually not drawn to patterns but I loved the wintry white dot pattern in the top! I love the open shoulders with the ruffle details. It’s also versatile — you can dress it up with a skirt or wear it with a pair of jeans! Since we have mild winters in Georgia, I opted for the black cape as well. It quickly has become my go-to when I need an additional layer for the evening.
What’s the one style faux pas you hope doesn’t repeat itself in the new year?
You won’t see me wearing glitzy jewelry on our beaches. I opt for simple accessories on the beach and keep the glitzy jewelry for the evenings.
When it comes to shopping for coats or capes, what are the two most important things you look for?
I absolutely love outerwear but it can be difficult to find the perfect coat and cape that works with our mild winters. I always look for something that fits well even when I have multiple layers underneath. Is it still going to fit right when I have on a sweater and scarf? I also avoid coats with patterns because it will likely clash with my outfit. You can always dress up a coat or cape with a hat, gloves or scarves.
What are you most looking forward to in 2018?
I always look forward to a new year because it’s the perfect time to set goals for my personal and professional life. Both my sister and sister-in-law are getting married next year and I’m SO excited for them! I’m also very grateful that Lavin Label allows me to travel — so I look forward to experiencing new places in the new year, one being Provence, France!
