There’s always a reason to eat cake.

And if there’s someone who definitely agrees with that statement, it’s Sam Cade of Cade’s Cakes in Dallas, TX.

Born in Dallas, Sam is a Texas girl through and through. She went to college in Austin to study business at the University of Texas, where in her words, “decorating cakes really took off.”

After her sophomore year, Sam changed directions and headed to New York City where she attended the International Culinary Center.

Not long after (and post “eating [her] way through the city”), it was time for Sam to move back to The Lone Star State.

She says,

“I missed the crazy cake requests I would get as Cade’s Cakes, and I missed working independently. So after a year and a half, I moved back to take Cade’s Cakes full-time.”

How did you get your start making cakes? 

I have always been creative with a huge sweet tooth (Martha Stewart was my idol growing up). When it came to finding a job in high school, bakeries were the first place I looked.

I started off just making cakes on the side for friends and families but with word of mouth and Instagram it just grew from there.

Inspired by our storefront in Dallas and our iconic Totes Y’all Vanderbilt Tote, Sam created two cakes that perfectly represent Draper James.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Dallas? 

The food!! Donuts from Mustang Donuts are my favorite sweet treats, but the breakfast tacos, barbecue, and margaritas cannot be replaced elsewhere.

Dallas is also growing like crazy and really embraces the food scene. It is a fun time to be growing along with the city.

How did you come up with your slogan “cake y’all?” 

Living in NYC all my friends laughed at my constant use of the word y’all. It quickly became my known one-liner. One day I said “Cake Y’all,” and it just clicked.

What’s your favorite thing about what you do?

Definitely the creativity! No two weeks are the same; no two cakes are the same really.

Customers in Dallas keep me on my toes with new cake challenges to figure out every week. I get to combine my love of food, crafts, baking and painting every day!
